Selaković: Let's celebrate the Serbian Unity, Freedom and National Flag Day together

10. Jul 2021.
Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Nikola Selaković, called on the citizens of Serbia and Serbs in the region and the diaspora to celebrate this year's Serbian Unity, Freedom and National Flag Day, which is marked on 15 September, by highlighting the Serbian tricolor flag.

"Our flag is common to the Serbs in Serbia, Republika Srpska and Montenegro, but we have not done enough to build and respect the cult of the flag, which is rooted in many nations", Selaković said, addressing the participants of the Summit of Serbian Youth and Students of the Balkans "Synergy as the key to success".

Selaković reminded that the Thessaloniki front was broken through on 15 September, when the written-off Serbia managed to rise, and that there were Serbs in that army from all parts of the former Yugoslavia, even from the other side of the ocean.

According to him, we need to be much more educated and learn much more about the foundations of our national consciousness.

Speaking about the need to nurture a common Serbian identity, Selaković assessed that we as a nation will survive if we are united and ready to fight for our own future.

"If it was easy to be a Serb, everyone would be a Serb. But we are a nation that has survived on the historical scene because we fight, and it will be easier for us to fight together, with our common consciousness and identity", Selaković said.

The head of Serbian diplomacy emphasized the importance of stronger and more massive involvement of young people in Serbian public and cultural diplomacy, and suggested that, within the joint struggle to promote our culture as a feature of national identity, they start working together on social networks.

"I think that the role of young people in this fight is crucial, and for you, it takes just 30 seconds and one click. You all should make an effort to introduce the whole world to what we as a nation are proud of in this way… Let's network the Serbian youth in the region, so come to Belgrade and get to know each other. See each other and cooperate, and we will be there to help you when you offer an idea", said Selaković.

Selaković thanked SKONUS and the Center for Education and Development for organizing today's gathering, announcing that from next year, the MFA will finance the Summit of Serbian Youth and Students of the Balkans not through projects, but through regular budget financing.
