The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Marko Đurić, stated following his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Benin, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, that it is a particular honor for him to be the first Serbian foreign minister to visit this friendly country, emphasizing Serbia’s genuine interest in establishing close and substantive relations with Benin.

Minister Đurić recalled that during Minister Bakari’s previous visit to Belgrade, it was confirmed that Serbia and Benin share similar views on numerous global issues, reflecting the common values upheld by both countries—including adherence to the United Nations Charter and a commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes among major powers. He added that both sides are equally committed to strengthening economic cooperation for the benefit of their respective peoples.

The Serbian Foreign Minister underlined that during his stay in Benin he would hold several meetings with senior government officials and relevant ministers, engaging in substantive political consultations aimed not only at advancing political ties but also economic relations. Minister Đurić expressed his strong belief that the future belongs to countries such as Serbia and Benin, which are focused on economic growth and the well-being of their citizens.

He noted that while in Cotonou, he had the opportunity to witness the dynamic development of the city and observe numerous infrastructure projects reflecting the accomplishments of President Talon and the current administration, congratulating his hosts on the progress achieved. He expressed confidence that partnerships between Serbian and Beninese companies—as well as collaboration between the scientific and academic communities of both countries—will yield significant results.

Minister Đurić further noted that particular attention during the talks was devoted to cooperation in the field of education and announced that Serbia would offer a number of scholarships for students from Benin. He concluded that Serbia will also encourage young professionals and students from Serbia to spend time in Benin, allowing for mutual learning and joint contributions to the economic and political development of both countries.

Benin’s Foreign Minister expressed great satisfaction with Minister Đurić’s visit, underscoring Serbia’s prominent historical role in supporting African nations during their struggles for independence under the leadership of President Tito. He added that Minister Đurić’s visit gains further importance in the context of the upcoming 65th anniversary of Benin’s independence.

Minister Bakari noted that during his meeting with the Serbian foreign minister, several concrete areas for cooperation were identified, stressing that this visit marks the beginning of a more intensive and dynamic phase in Serbia–Benin relations.

Following the meeting, the two ministers signed the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the Republic of Benin on the Abolition of Visas for Holders of Diplomatic, Official, and Service Passports.
