Selaković for Mexican TV about the economic successes of Serbia and cooperation with Mexico
Asked what Latin American countries can do to advance and deepen their understanding of the Western Balkans, the minister stressed the importance of regular communication and exchange of visits at the highest level, adding that everything should be done to enable greater connectivity.
Speaking about the historical connection of our countries, Minister Selaković pointed out that there is great interest in the history and culture of Mexico in Serbia, and that he hopes that cultural events organized by our embassy throughout Mexico, such as the street exhibition on our cultural heritage in Kosovo and Metohija in the center of Mexico City and concerts of our musicians throughout Mexico, significantly contributed to the growth of interest in our culture.
"Only in that way, through communication and understanding, will we be able to use many potentials for cooperation that already exist, but were not optimally used in the previous period", the minister said in an interview that was broadcast on several Mexican televisions.
To the statement of the journalist that Serbia deserves a place in the European Union, Minister Selaković answered that the EU is our strategic goal.
"We realize almost 70 percent of our total trade exchange with EU countries, four of the eight countries in our immediate neighborhood are already members of the EU. In addition, we share a value system with the EU", said Minister Selaković, and reminded that our government pays great attention to the integration process – we have opened 18 of 35 chapters, we are the first country in the region to adopt a new methodology of the accession process, and in the last seven years we have carried out very successful economic reforms.
The Minister used the opportunity to acquaint the Mexican public with the results of economic reforms in Serbia, specifying that for the second year in a row we are the fastest growing European economy, which is the best indicator of our success, seeing how seven years ago we recorded negative economic growth of -3.6 percent, while we will end this year with a growth of at least 6.5 percent. Also, the unemployment rate fell from 26.9 percent to 8 percent.
"We are the leading European destination when it comes to attracting foreign investment, so today Serbia attracts 61 percent of total foreign direct investment in the region", said Minister Selaković, adding that today Serbia is developing rapidly, and that this is the result of difficult economic reforms conducted by President Vučić.
