Serbia is a sincere partner in building a more stable, just, and prosperous world.
Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Nikola Selaković, attended the opening of the exhibition "The First Conference of Heads of State and Government of Non-Aligned Countries", set up in the Archives of Yugoslavia.
Selaković said that the exhibited documents give a unique overview of the important moments of the Non-Aligned Movement's entry into the world political scene and added that this exhibition is an introduction and announcement of a commemorative gathering scheduled for October 11th & 12th, which will mark the 60th anniversary of the Belgrade Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement.
"The Non-Aligned Movement has contributed to preserving peace and defence of the universal values and principles contained in the United Nations Charter, and we remember the First Non-Aligned Conference as the moment of its birth, when the principles of peaceful coexistence, established a few years earlier in Bandung, were confirmed," he said.
He reminded that the Belgrade Conference was faced with numerous challenges, considering that the confrontation between the East and the West resulted in events such as The Rise of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban crisis, and international peace was called into question by military interventions on the African and Asian continents.
"The heads of state and government gathered at the conference in Belgrade saw the policy of peaceful coexistence as the only alternative to the Cold War," emphasized the Head of Serbian diplomacy by adding that those present in Belgrade advocated self-determination, independence, free choice of economic, cultural, and social development paths and insisted on responsibility and a constructive approach in world politics.
Selaković also remarked that today, 60 years later, the fundamental ideas of the movement are still relevant, even though the world is faced with numerous political, economic, social, and other challenges.
"Non-aligned countries still share a lot in common, embodied in courage, pride, philanthropy and the pursuit of free and peaceful development. "Serbia has always been and will remain a sincere partner to all those who are ready to share the responsibility of implementing the joint construction of a more stable, just and prosperous world," said Minister Selaković.
