Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia regarding the remarks of Denis Bećirović

02. Aug 2025.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia expresses serious concern over the recent statements made by Mr. Denis Bećirović, member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which represent yet another attempt to shift personal political responsibility for the internal crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina onto neighboring states, primarily Serbia.

Such an approach does not contribute to dialogue, stability, or the building of trust among the peoples of the region. On the contrary, it further complicates the already complex political dynamics within Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Rather than unjustifiably invoking Serbia in internal political confrontations, it would be far more constructive to focus attention on the genuine challenges affecting the functioning of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s institutions. In this context, Mr. Bećirović is also expected to reflect on his own role in deepening the crisis of trust and weakening dialogue among the peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mr. Bećirović, whose public remarks often serve to inflame political tensions and exacerbate divisions, lacks both the political and moral credibility to lecture the Republic of Serbia.

The Republic of Serbia resolutely respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as its constitutional framework grounded in the Dayton Peace Agreement, to which Serbia is a signatory and guarantor. In line with this, Serbia not only has the right, but also an international obligation, to develop special parallel relations with the Republic of Srpska, as explicitly provided for under the Dayton Agreement. Any attempt to dispute these relations constitutes a direct attack on the principles of the Dayton framework and an effort at its political revisionism.

The Ministry emphasizes that the politicization of bilateral relations and their instrumentalization for domestic political purposes do not serve the interests of peace, stability, or cooperation in the region.

Serbia will not accept being cast as a political scapegoat for irresponsible statements and actions, nor will it allow itself to be sacrificed for the ambitions of others. As a country firmly committed to regional peace and cooperation, Serbia remains dedicated to a policy of stability, mutual respect, and the honoring of international agreements.

In this spirit, the Republic of Serbia will continue to consistently uphold the Dayton Peace Agreement, strengthen its relations with the Republic of Srpska, and resolutely oppose all those who attempt to destabilize the region through political campaigns directed against our country.
