Trees planted on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement
The planting was attended by the Prime Minister of Serbia Ana Brnabić, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Selaković and the participants in the Summit that is being held in Belgrade on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the first conference of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Additionally, Brnabić, Selaković and several foreign officials signed the “Friendship Park” book.
The trees were symbolically planted in the Friendship Park, since the construction of that park symbolically marked the founding of the Non-Aligned Movement, one of the founders of which was the former Yugoslavia.
Namely, the idea for the establishment of the Friendship Park of a memorial character came from the youth of the Reforestation Movement, who, in honour of the First Conference of the Non-Aligned in Belgrade in 1961, made the decision to establish a memorial park as a symbol of the struggle for peace and equality.
Their initiative was supported by the Council for Culture and the Council for Urbanism of the People's Committee of the City of Belgrade on August 29, 1961, and Tito's planting of the Plane Tree on September 7, 1961 is considered the ceremonial opening of the park.
On the occasion of marking six decades since the founding of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, a two-day Summit began in Belgrade today, and the meeting gathered representatives of more than 105 countries, as well as nine other delegations of international organizations.
The hosts of the gathering, which is being held at the Belgrade Fair this year, are Serbia and Azerbaijan.
