USEFUL INFORMATION

HEALTH SITUATION – Health services are at a fairly low level. Health insurance is recommended. There are many cases of malaria and dengue fever in the peripheral parts of the country.
Only bottled drinking water should be used and food and beverages should be avoided in street and small restaurants.

Avoid home-made spirits and cocktails, non-licensed liquor shops and bars, due to risk of poisoning. Check if bottle seals are intact and labels well printed before consuming your drinks.

SECURITY SITUATION – Security is at an enviable level, although thefts are not uncommon (theft of purses / wallets, etc.).

TRANSPORT – Domestic air traffic is the fastest and safest way to transport to the most important tourist destinations. The road network in Laos is in pretty bad shape.
Foreigners need an international driver's license to drive motor vehicles.

OTHER INFORMATION – Hotel costs can be paid by credit cards (Visa and Mastercard), cash in local currency (kip) or foreign currency (US dollar is the dominant foreign currency). The cost of food and drinks in restaurants and shopping in shopping malls is paid in local currency.
